Merkel Meets Chinese Bishop on Final Day of China Visit
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has met with a Chinese Catholic bishopin
Shanghai on the final day of her visit to China. Ms. Merkel, who is a
ProtestantChristian, spent half an hour talking with Bishop Aloysius Jin
Luxian, who gave her a tour of Shanghai's Saint Ignatius Cathedral.
Bishop Jin, who is more than 90 years old, is affiliated with China's
official Catholic Church, which is not recognized by the Vatican.The
bishop spent 27 years in prison and labor camps after the communist
takeover of China. His standing was later restored by China's government
after the death of Mao Zedong in 1976.Ms. Merkel said Monday she raised
the issues of religious freedom and human rights in China during her
talks with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.

Annan: China Has Crucial Role in N.Korea Nuclear Talks
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan says the North Korean
nuclear standoff cannot be allowed to continue, and that China's role is
crucial in international attempts to resolve the dispute. Speaking today
(Tuesday) in Beijing, Mr. Annan said China's continuing leadership will
be essential to ensure that nuclear weapons are kept out of the Korean
peninsula. The secretary-general says he discussed the international
community's nuclear dispute with both North Korea and Iran when he met
in Beijing Friday with (Chinese) President Hu Jintao.
China's Foreign Ministry announced Tuesday that North Korea's foreign
minister (Paek Nam-sun) will visit China next week, at the same time as
the United States' top negotiator in the Korean nuclear talks. Assistant
Secretary of State Hill is expected to discuss the stalled negotiations
with Chinese officials, but there is no indication he will meet with
Pyongyang's envoy.
