43 Killed In Violence Across Iraq

Iraqi police say insurgents killed at least 43 people in a wave of
bombings and attacks across the country.

The deadliest attack was in a predominantly Sunni Arab neighborhood
(Adhamiyah) in Baghdad, where a car bomb near an Iraqi army patrol
killed 12 people. A short time later, another bomb in the area killed
five more people.

During the bombings, defense witnesses testified at the trial of ousted
Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and seven co-defendants on charges of crimes
against humanity.

One witness testified on behalf of Anwad al-Bandar, the chief judge who
sentenced 148 Shi'ites to death following an assassination attempt against
Saddam.

Java Hospitals Crowded as Indonesia Quake Death Toll Surpasses 5,000

Relief workers on Indonesia's earthquake-battered Java island said they
are running short of food, water and medical supplies, but aid is slowly
arriving.

Indonesian officials today (Monday) estimated that more than five
thousand people died and nearly 200-thousand were made homeless in the
disaster. Injured people continue to arrive at already overcrowded
hospitals. Doctors are now performing surgeries outside.

But international aid has begun to trickle in and authorities have
reopened the damaged airport in hard-hit Yogyakarta city. Indonesian
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is in the area, supervising relief
efforts.

A U.N. relief plane brought water, tents, cooking sets and hygiene kits
destined for the worst-hit district of Bantul. The U.S. military says it
is sending medical personnel, equipment and supplies to the region.

Several other nations have pledged cash and aid.
