Terrorist Leader Zarqawi Killed in Iraq Air Strike

A joint military operation by U.S. and Iraqi forces has killed terrorist
leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki
announced Zarqawi's death at a news conference Thursday, together with
the U.S. military commander in Iraq, General George Casey, and U.S.
Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad.

Prime Minister al-Maliki says seven of Zarqawi's associates died with
him in a "safe house" near Baquba, northeast of the capital. General
Casey says Zarqawi was betrayed by senior members of his own
organization, which carried out almost daily suicide bombings and other
attacks over the past three years. The general says Zarqawi's identity
was confirmed from fingerprints, scars and "facial recognition."

Al-Qaida in Iraq confirmed Zarqawi's death in a message posted on the
Internet saying he had been "martyred." Jordanian-born Zarqawi took an
active role in video and Internet statements by his terrorist group, and
he was said to have taken part personally in beheadings of hostages and
other killings. He had remained at large until now despite the U.S.
offer of a 25-million-dollar reward for his capture.

Bush: Justice Delivered in Dealth of Zarqawi

President Bush says U.S. forces have delivered justice to the most
wanted terrorist in Iraq -- Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Speaking at the White
House, Mr. Bush called Zarqawi's death a severe blow to al-Qaida. But
Mr. Bush warned that Zarqawi's death does not mean an end to violence in
Iraq.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair says Zarqawi's death is an important
moment for Iraq and a blow to al-Qaida around the world.

The brother of British engineer Kenneth Bigley, who was kidnapped and
killed by Zarqawi's group in 2004, said the world has rid itself of an
evil person. But the father of American Nick Berg, who was beheaded in
2004, said Zarqawi's death brought him no sense of relief and will
likely spark a new wave of revenge killings.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said t is "a great day" for the
people of Iraq. He cautioned Zaqawi's death does not signal the end of
the insurgency.
