Iraqi Insurgents Attack Government Compound, killing 16 Policemen
Insurgents in Iraq have attacked a government compound north of Baghdad,
killing at least 16 policemen and freeing more than 30 prisoners. Police
say about 100 heavily armed insurgents stormed the compound in Muqdidiya
early Tuesday morning. They set fire to the police headquarters building
and also attacked a court house. Police say at least 15 insurgents were
killed in the ensuing gunbattle with security forces.
The insurgents detonated a string of roadside bombs as they fled before
U.S. and Iraqi army reinforcements arrived.

China has complained to the United States about a national security
report that criticizes Beijing's military buildup and trade policies. China's
official Xinhua news agency quotes foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang as saying
the remarks were groundless and irresponsible. Qin Gang said Beijing was
requesting that the United States stop releasing remarks that are
harmful to the healthy development of Sino-U.S. relations. He also responded to
comments in the report that China was too secretive about its military
development, saying its military policy is "defensive in nature" -- but providing no
further details.
The White House report also reflected the Bush administration's concerns
about China's trade policies, saying Beijing was seeking to direct
markets rather than opening them up.
