Annan Urges Direct US Iran Talks

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan is calling on the
United States to hold direct talks with Iran over its nuclear
program. In an televion interview televised in the U.S. Thursday,
Annan says Washington should join negotiations taking place
between Tehran and the European trio of Britain, Germany and
France. Annan says the Iranians probably believe the Europeans
are consulting with Washington anyway. He says if all the key players
engaged in dialogue, it may result in a satisfactory
agreement.

The U.N. Security Council has begun debate over a draft resolution
that invokes a section of the U.N. charter which can be used to
authorize sanctions against Iran, as well as military force as a
last resort.

Vatican Foresees Excommunication of Two Chinese Bishops

The Vatican says it expects to excommunicate two men who were ordained
as Catholic Bishops in China this week without the approval of Pope
Benedict.

A Vatican statement Thursday denounced China's appointments as a "grave
wound to the unity of the Church." It says that under Canon Law,
excommunication is automatic for ordinations without papal approval.
The Roman Catholic Church is expected to complete a formal investigation
before a final announcement.

Earlier this week, Hong Kong Cardinal Joseph Zen said that the
ordinations were illegitimate and coerced. He said those who took part
in the ceremonies did so under threat from Chinese government authorities.

China said the bishops were appointed by a democratic process, and
followed the wishes of a majority of followers. Catholics in China are
only allowed to worship at government-approved churches. However,
millions belong to underground Roman Catholic churches loyal to the Vatican.
